NLIS welcomes minority ethnic lawyers, law students, and legal professionals who are based in or have a connection to Scotland. We also welcome others who support our mission of promoting diversity and inclusion in the Scottish legal sector.
You can apply via our online registration form at nlis.scot/members/register. Your application will be reviewed by our admin team, and you will receive a confirmation email once approved. Membership is free.
Membership with NLIS is currently free of charge. We ask that members contribute to our community by attending events, participating in the mentorship programme, and supporting our advocacy efforts.
Yes, absolutely. We actively encourage law students to join NLIS. Student members benefit from our mentorship programme, access to networking events, and a supportive community as they navigate their legal careers.
Our mentorship programme pairs experienced legal professionals (mentors) with members who are earlier in their careers (mentees). Pairings are made based on practice area, career goals, and availability. Once paired, you arrange regular check-ins and meetings according to your shared schedule.
Yes. Many of our members both receive mentoring from more senior professionals and offer mentoring to those earlier in their journey. We encourage this multi-directional approach to professional development.
Typically, our mentorship pairings run for an academic or calendar year, though many mentor–mentee relationships continue beyond the formal programme. The duration is flexible and agreed between both parties.
Our events take place across Scotland, primarily in Edinburgh and Glasgow. We also host online events via Zoom to ensure members across Scotland and beyond can participate.
Some of our events are open to the public and to supporters of our mission. Others are exclusively for NLIS members. Each event listing on our website will specify who can attend.
The best way is to become a member and log into your member portal, where you will see upcoming events. You can also follow us on social media or check our Events page at nlis.scot/events.
